In creating his architectural center in 1976, Victor Vasarely made a gesture of exceptional significance and generosity. This French artist of Hungarian origin (Pécs 1906 – Paris 1997), internationally recognized as the father of Op Art, a specialist in optical and kinetic effects, as well as a brilliant advertising illustrator, created in Aix-en-Provence “La Cité polychrome of happiness “, bringing together visual artists, architects and urban planners, and wished to promote a social art accessible to all.
what's new for the start of the fall season ?
An unexpected consequence of the Covid ...
is the postponement of the dates of the Vasarely Foundation exhibition in partnership with the Center Pompidou “South-East, constructivism in heritage, Eastern Europe and South America”: it will therefore take place from September 12, 2020 to September 31 January 2021. As a result, the conference room will not be available on these dates. We have, however, found a solution that we hope will suit you.
During this period we can already assure you ... ...
that the conferences on contemporary art will indeed be held, always on Tuesday morning, in the new Aix room dedicated to contemporary music, the 6MIC. The conditions will be excellent : good acoustics, space (a level of 220 places), large screen, parking of sufficient size, cafeteria. For many, this will be the opportunity to discover this astonishing building, built by Rudy Ricciotti, (the architect of the Pavillon Noir and the Mucem), which benefits from the latest technical innovations. Another advantage is that it is located a 10-minute walk from the Vasarely Foundation, allowing all Aixpress users not to change their good habits.
During this period we can already offer you the following dates for the start of the season : September 22, October 13, November 10 and December 8, 2020, always at 10:30 a.m.
We appreciated your loyalty and we are convinced that you will follow us, temporarily, in this brand new and remarkable space, for which we will send you a detailed access map at the start of the school year.
But this temporary relocation only concerns the Tuesday morning conferences, and we will meet with the Vasarely Foundation from February 2021. Other conferences will be offered to you in the evening at the Vasarely Foundation by the end of the year, as soon as their programming is fixed.
We remind you that your membership in the Association of Friends of the Vasarely Foundation gives you free access to the exhibitions of the Vasarely Foundation, including the one currently taking place until 23 August 2020: “The dispersed works of Vasarely – Museum teaching of Gordes, 1970-1996 ”.
A conference by Agnès Ghenassia
The portrait, which in the nineteenth century was still the result of private commissions, has become among modern artists the support of many formal researches. Much more than a simple imitation of the model, it bears witness to many questions linked to the “presence” of an identity, even when screened by distortion.
Whether it is the fruit of a face to face with the living model or composed from a photograph, what does the “flesh” of the painting bring to the face?
Today, portraiture is making a massive return to contemporary art, sometimes questioning the “I” as a social, moving construction, and moving away from the true and the authentic, but still showing interest in individual.
