Children and adolescents in modern and contemporary art

A conference by Agnès Ghenassia

Tuesday 27th of September 2022 at 10:30 am

The Impressionists took as models the children around them and their own children in scenes of family life or games which contrast with the fixed postures of the commissioned portraits of their predecessors.
Many artists who became fathers, Otto Dix, Paul Klee, Picasso, Gerhard Richter, have taken a very personal, tender look at childhood.
Balthus and Paula Rego are known for their enigmatic, disturbing little girls. Other artists like Boltanski or Bernard Faucon, express childhood nostalgia, and Marlene Dumas, like Claire Tabouret, paint children
serious, questioning, as well as Ron Mueck and Charles Ray in sculpture. Finally, by representing children, the painter Zhang Xiaogang and the artist Prune Noury express the same concerns about the demography of China and Patricia Piccinini questions the future of the human race.

The conference will be held at the 6MIC (Salle des Musiques Actuelles du Pays d’Aix), located at the entrance to the new district of Constance in Aix-en-Provence, a few hundred meters from the Vasarely Foundation, at the level of the chemin Hawthorns.
